Some vehicles are more than just transport; they’re the start of a new chapter. This 2004 Mazda Bongo Aero 2.0 petrol came to us as a Grade 4, rust-free, low-mileage Japanese import, ready to be reimagined. With only 90,000km (just 56,000 miles) on the clock and a flawless chassis, it was the perfect blank canvas for a full “Your Van, Your Way” transformation.
What followed was a complete journey through our workshop — from bare metal to fully fitted campervan, every inch tailored for life on the road. If you’re looking for a one-of-a-kind Bongo that blends craftsmanship, comfort and long-term reliability, this might be the van you’ve been waiting for.

It Arrived Looking Nice, But We Saw the Potential for Greatness
When this van rolled into our yard, it carried the typical signs of a long life in Japan. The interior was dated, the factory paint was ok but showed signs of its age, and it had clearly been used, but never abused. The key difference? The chassis was pristine. No rust. No welding. Just a rock-solid shell that deserved a second life.
We knew straight away this wasn’t just another conversion. This was going to be a showcase of what’s possible when you start with the right base and build it your way.
This was going to be a “Your Van, Your Way” build from start to finish.

Stripped Out and Ready to Begin Again
We began by stripping the Bongo’s interior back to bare metal. Everything — from wall panels to flooring — was removed, cleaned, and prepped for a full custom conversion. It’s during this phase that our team maps out the entire layout, ensuring every cable, pipe, and panel has its place.
We then carried out a major service and inspection, including:
- Full engine and gearbox service
- Cambelt and water pump kit
- New oil seals, filters, coolant and antifreeze
- Replaced both coolant temperature sensors and thermostat
- Installed a brand-new radiator and coolant alarm
Mechanically, this Bongo is as sound as they come — with no corners cut, and nothing left to chance.

Laying the Foundation: Flooring and Carpets
Once clean and ready, we installed high-quality safety flooring, with a choice of colours available to suit the customer’s style. The front carpets were fully refurbished, and we added new mats with Mazda Bongo branding for a crisp, factory-fresh finish.
Next, we turned our attention to the trims. All rear door cards were retrimmed in grey or black stretch material, with the top sections upholstered to match the new rock and roll bed. The front seats were also retrimmed, all in triple black diamond-stitched vinyl, giving the entire interior a cohesive, high-end look.

The Heart of the Camper: Fitting the Slimline Pod
At the centre of this build is our beautifully crafted and CNC machined slimline rear kitchen pod, featuring:
A leisure battery and split charge system powering USB ports and 12v lighting throughout (as many lights as you need — we’ve made it flexible)
Twin gas hob and sink with taps
Water storage tanks
Under-seat fridge/freezer
Ample compartments and roof locker for flexible storage
Discreet 240v hook-up with twin sockets
The craftsmanship here is key, smooth edges, accessible drawers, and quality fixtures that look and feel like they belong in a modern camper. This is the heart of the conversion, and it sets the tone for everything around it.

Rock and Roll Comfort: Sleeping, Storage, and Style
We then installed one of our signature ultra-wide rock and roll beds, wide enough to comfortably sleep two adults and a child. But this isn’t just a bed. It’s a smart space-saver with hidden storage compartments and a built-in drawer fridge, giving you easy access to cool storage without sacrificing floor space.
Up front, the passenger captain’s chair was converted to a swivel seat, allowing for an open, social setup when parked up. Whether you’re sharing a meal, planning your route or just watching the world go by, the inside of this Bongo is designed to feel like home.

Immaculate Underside – Rust-Free and Ready to Protect
One of the standout features of this Bongo is its incredible condition underneath. Straight from Japan, the chassis is completely rust-free, showing no signs of previous repairs or corrosion. It’s exactly what you’d expect from a carefully selected Grade 4 import, and it gives you a rock-solid foundation for years of safe, reliable travel.
To preserve that condition here in the UK, we carried out a full underseal treatment, along with wax oil inside the sills and cross members — protecting your investment from road salt and moisture, season after season.

Pop-Top Perfection
To complete the camper setup, we installed a brand-new pop-top roof and canvas, complete with roof boards, turning this van into a proper two-level home on wheels. Whether it’s extra sleeping space or standing room you need, the pop-top offers both.

Power, Tech, and Off-Grid Independence
This Bongo isn’t just built for campsites. It’s prepped for adventure. We installed:
- A new leisure battery with solar panel
- MPPT charge controller for maximum solar efficiency
- 240v hook-up with double sockets
- 12v lighting and multiple USB points
- An upgraded AV system with DAB, Bluetooth, and a reverse camera
Everything you need to go off-grid for the weekend, or the week, with full confidence in your power setup.
And for comfort in all seasons, we added a powerful 8kW diesel night heater, perfect for chilly evenings and early morning starts.

A Stunning New Look: Silver and Blue Pearl Respray
No great build is complete without a head-turning finish. This Bongo received a full respray in metallic silver and custom blue pearl, finished in three stages for depth, clarity, and durability. The bumpers, spoiler and grilles were colour-coded, the trims restored, and the alloy wheels refurbished with new branded tyres.
We then carried out a comprehensive underseal, even though the chassis was already immaculate. We also wax-oiled the sills and cross members, safeguarding it for many years to come.

Aftercare That Goes the Distance
