We recently had the pleasure of working on a Mazda Bongo that journeyed all the way from Scotland to our workshop at Mazda Bongo Auto Centre Ltd. The van had failed its MOT due to extensive corrosion and required a comprehensive restoration. Here’s a detailed look at the transformation process that brought this beloved camper back to life.
Initial Inspection
Upon arrival, we conducted a thorough inspection of the van to assess the extent of the damage and determine the necessary repairs. The inspection revealed significant corrosion in various areas, necessitating extensive work to ensure the vehicle’s safety and longevity.
Work Carried Out
1. Replacing Corroded Sills
- We started by cutting out the heavily corroded inner and outer sills.
- These were replaced with genuine Mazda Bongo replacement sills to ensure durability and a perfect fit.
2. Rear Crossmember Corners
- Both rear crossmember corners were replaced using genuine outer crossmember corner panels.
- We also fabricated new inner rear crossmember corners to ensure complete structural integrity.
3. Front Chassis Outriggers
- Both front inner chassis outriggers were replaced to restore the van’s structural strength.
4. Rear Wheel Arches
- We replaced both rear outer wheel arches with genuine parts.
- New rear inner wheel arches were fabricated to match.
Paint and Bodywork
1. Alloy Wheels Refurbishment
- The alloy wheels were refurbished to look as good as new.
2. Tailgate Replacement
- The heavily corroded tailgate was replaced with a used but well-maintained tailgate.
- All doors were removed for a complete respray.
3. Custom Paint Job
- The customer chose a striking two-tone color scheme: Sumatra Green for the lower half and silver for the top half.
- This fresh paint job gave the Bongo a vibrant, modern look.
Service and MOT
1. Engine and Gearbox Service
- We carried out a full engine and gearbox service to ensure optimal performance.
2. Underbody Underseal
- The entire underside of the van was rubbed down and given a comprehensive underbody underseal, including the inner wheel arches.
- All suspension components were also rubbed down and painted for added protection.
3. Electrical Repairs
- The customer reported that the main battery kept going flat. Upon inspection, we discovered the leisure battery had been incorrectly wired.
- We rewired the full 12v electrics and included a split charge relay to prevent future issues.
4. MOT
- The van was given a 12-month MOT with no advisories, making it road-ready and safe for future adventures.
Ready for the Next Adventure
With extensive corrosion repaired, a fresh new look, and all mechanical and electrical issues resolved, this Mazda Bongo is now ready for many more years of exploration and enjoyment. It’s always rewarding to see a vehicle transformed from a state of disrepair to being adventure-ready once again.
