This Mazda Bongo restoration was a full rebuild from the ground up, combining major structural repairs, a custom conversion and a standout Riviera Blue respray.
With a factory-fitted pop top, solid bones and a customer who wanted it done properly, this project became a full restoration and custom build rolled into one. The aim was simple. Make it structurally sound, protect it long term, then turn it into a camper that genuinely stands out and is ready for years of adventures.
Mazda Bongo Restoration Begins With Structural Assessment
When the van arrived, the issues underneath were extensive. This was not surface corrosion or isolated patches. Multiple structural areas needed attention to make the van safe and solid again.
Rather than patching and moving on, the decision was made to strip it back and repair every affected section properly. That is the only way a restoration like this makes sense.

Structural Welding Work In This Mazda Bongo Restoration
This Bongo required significant welding across the chassis, sills and rear sections. Each area was repaired individually to restore the body’s strength and integrity.
Structural work completed included:
- Front lower crossmember repair
- Front chassis outrigger repair
- O/S inner sill welding
- O/S rear outer sill welding
- Full N/S inner and outer sill replacement
- N/S rear chassis tub repair
- Full N/S rear corner replacement
- Full O/S rear corner replacement
This is the work that truly saves a van. It is not visible once finished, but it is the difference between a camper that lasts and one that continues to deteriorate beneath the surface.

Protection And Underbody Finish
Once the welding was completed, the underside was fully prepared and protected.
This included a comprehensive rub down and underseal across the entire underside, with suspension components cleaned and painted matte black to match. The result is a clean, protected underside that looks as good as it performs and is far better equipped to cope with UK weather.

Cooling System Protection Upgrades
Given the amount of work invested in this van, additional protection made sense.
We fitted:
- Coolant auto bleed kit
- Coolant alarm
These upgrades provide early warning of coolant issues and help protect the engine long term, especially important on a Bongo that is now destined for regular use and touring.
Factory Pop Top And Your Van Your Way Conversion
This Bongo retained its factory-fitted pop top, giving excellent headroom and additional sleeping space. With that in place, the customer opted for one of our Your Van Your Way side conversions.
The conversion included all the usual features you would expect from an MBAC build, designed around real use rather than gimmicks. Practical storage, a comfortable layout and a clean finish make the van easy to live with.
As part of the interior work, both front seats were retrimmed, keeping everything looking fresh and cohesive. A front swivel was deliberately left out, based on how the customer planned to use the space.

Electrics And Technology
To bring the camper fully up to date, we also installed:
- Solar panel system
- Diesel night heater
- New media player with DAB radio and reverse camera
These additions transform how the van is used, making it suitable for year-round trips, off-grid stays and long journeys without compromise.
Wheels, Tyres And Stance
The finishing touches underneath included:
- Two new front tyres, replacing cracked originals
- Refurbishment of all four alloy wheels
- Wheels finished in black for contrast
This not only improves safety and handling but also sharpens the overall look of the van once the paintwork was complete.
Riviera Blue Finish As Part Of This Mazda Bongo Restoration
With all structural repairs completed and the van fully protected underneath, attention turned to the paint and bodywork. This stage is where the transformation becomes most visible, but it only works properly when the groundwork has been laid first.
The lower half of the van was finished in Riviera Blue, a bold colour that suits the Bongo perfectly and gives it real presence without feeling over-the-top. The top half was painted white and finished with a pearlescent top coat, adding depth and a subtle sparkle that changes with different light. The roof spoiler and mirrors were also painted in Riviera Blue to tie the whole look together and give the van a clean, cohesive finish.
As part of the Gold restoration work, all lower-body panels were properly addressed, including new genuine rear wheel arches, with the front and rear bumpers repainted to match. This was not about hiding age, but about restoring the bodywork correctly so it looks right and lasts.
The result is a Mazda Bongo restoration that feels fresh, well-cared-for, and genuinely special. It stands out for the right reasons and reflects the level of work carried out beneath the surface, not just the colour on top.

A Van Rebuilt For The Long Term
This was not a quick makeover. It was a full restoration and rebuild with the future firmly in mind.
From major structural welding and underseal, through to cooling protection, conversion work, and a standout respray, every stage was completed to ensure this Bongo is safe, reliable, and genuinely enjoyable to own.
It is now a camper that feels solid, special and ready for many years of adventures ahead.
