A heartfelt restoration, from failing metal to a fresh two tone finish
Some vans arrive as projects. Others arrive as promises. This Mazda Bongo came in carrying years of weather, wear, and a brave request from its owner. Keep it alive. Keep it beautiful. Keep it theirs. We said yes.
First look, first steps
The inspection told a clear story. Rust had crept into the rear of the van and across several structural points. Both rear inner and outer wheel arches had reached the end of their life. Both rear crossmember corners were failing. The lower sections of the driver and passenger doors were tired and needed proper metalwork, not filler. The screen aperture also showed signs of corrosion that would spoil any new paint if left untreated.
From the start we committed to cutting out the rot, fabricating fresh steel, and rebuilding strength the right way. No shortcuts. No hidden issues under thick paint. Just honest metal and careful work.

The welding journey Begins
Exposing the damage before the rescue can begin.

A Rotten Front Crossmember That Could Not Be Ignored
During the strip down we uncovered one of the most serious problems on this Bongo. The front crossmember was completely rotten, hidden beneath layers of corrosion that had been building for years. This section is critical because it supports key mounting points and provides much of the front-end strength. Left unchecked it would have failed, putting both safety and stability at risk.
The only option was a full replacement. We cut away the entire section and fabricated clean mounting points before fitting a brand new crossmember. Once in place, it was fully seam welded, treated, and protected to ensure the repair was not just strong for today, but strong for years to come.
This was one of the most important parts of the restoration and it gives the owner peace of mind that the front of the van is now as solid as the day it left the factory.

Stage one: stripping back and revealing
We begin every structural rescue by removing corrosion to clean, sound metal. Panels were stripped and the affected areas were cut back. Only then can you see the true outline of what needs to be rebuilt. This stage is patient work. Every edge is checked. Every seam is inspected. Nothing is hidden.

Stage two: tacking for a perfect fit
With templates taken and repair sections fabricated, we tacked each new panel in place. This is the moment that sets the lines of the van. Small adjustments here create straight gaps, true door shuts, and factory shapes. We checked the profile of the arches, the run of the sills, and the corners of the crossmember until everything sat exactly where it should.

Stage three: full seam welded strength
Once alignment was perfect, we completed full seam welds. This gives continuous strength and helps prevent future water ingress. Welds were then dressed, treated, and sealed. We rebuilt both rear wheel arches inside and out, replaced both rear crossmember corners, and repaired the lower edges of both front doors. Additional hidden problems then came to light at the roof gutters and pillars, so we replaced roof pillars and carried out further welding along the roof sides and gutters. At the front we renewed the crossmember and repaired both headlamp panels to restore the nose of the van.

Preparation is everything
Great paint starts with great prep. Our painter spent the time to block, refine, and straighten every panel. The windscreen had to come out so we could repair the frame correctly. The old glass broke on removal, which can happen with aged screens, so a brand new windscreen and seal were fitted. A replacement front bumper was sourced to complete the front end and to ensure the final finish was consistent across the entire vehicle.
Door jambs were treated for corrosion and refinished. This matters. Open a door and you should see the same care and shine you see on the outer panels.

Colour that tells a story
The owner wanted a look that felt modern yet timeless. We prepped the full van for paint, then finished the lower half in Pearl Candy Red. The top half was painted Frozen White with Red Pearl, creating a crisp contrast that glows in sunlight and soft evening shade. It is confident without being loud. It looks right from every angle.

Underneath, protected for years to come
With the structure restored, we gave the van a comprehensive rub down and full underseal. Suspension components were cleaned and finished in matte black, so the underside looks as cared for as the body. Rust protection is not just a box to tick. It is the work that keeps a good restoration feeling good for many winters to come.
Details that make it feel new
We refurbished all four alloy wheels and finished them in black. This grounds the two tone paintwork and adds a subtle, purposeful stance. Wiper arms and scuttle trims were repainted, and new wiper blades were fitted for clear vision in any weather. Fresh Mazda decals were applied with care so the badges sit straight and true. Complimentary new number plates and logo floor mats went in at the end, a small touch that makes the first drive home feel special.
Honest extras and goodwill
Big restorations often reveal hidden work. When the roof and gutters needed more time, we gave them that time. When extra welding appeared on the rear panel and inner sills, we handled it. Several finishing touches were our way of saying thank you for the trust placed in us, including the underseal finish and detail work at no extra charge where possible. We believe in doing the job properly and standing by the result.
The Handover
When the covers came off, the owner saw more than new paint. They saw their van back again. Strong metal where there had been rust. Straight lines where there had been ripples. A colour that turns heads, and the calm feeling that this Bongo is ready for many more years on the road.
Pearl Candy Red below. Frozen White with Red Pearl above. Fresh wheels. Fresh glass. Fresh courage. A Mazda Bongo saved, and a promise kept.
