One of our customers recently bought a Mazda Bongo with a Full 12-Month MOT with no advisories — but when she brought it in for our FREE inspection, we uncovered serious safety issues that could have been disastrous on the road.
Unfortunately, not all MOTs are carried out with the diligence and care they should be. And when it comes to campervans like the Mazda Bongo, hidden problems can lurk beneath the surface. That’s why we always recommend a thorough inspection, even if your van just passed an MOT.

Here’s what we found — and how we fixed it:
️ Severe Corrosion — Hidden Structural Danger
- The issue: The Bongo had extensive rust across key structural points, including the sills, and suspension mounts. Corrosion like this weakens the chassis and can lead to catastrophic failure — especially dangerous for a heavy, fully loaded camper.
- Our fix: We carefully cut out all the corroded areas, replaced them with fresh steel fabricated panels and replacement inner and outer sills, and meticulously welded everything back to factory standards. Afterward, we treated the entire underside with rust prevention and applied a comprehensive underbody seal to protect against future corrosion.

⚡ Alternator Failure — Risk of Breakdown
- The issue: The alternator wasn’t charging properly, triggering the dashboard warning light. Left unchecked, this would cause the van to lose power, leaving the driver stranded.
- Our fix: We replaced the faulty alternator with a high-quality replacement unit, ensuring reliable charging and optimal battery health. We also checked the wiring for any signs of wear or damage to prevent future issues.
⛽ Fuel System Faults — Engine at Risk
- The issue: The sediment light was illuminated, indicating contamination or debris in the fuel system. This can cause serious damage to the fuel pump and injectors if ignored.
- Our fix: We installed a new fuel filter and flushed the system to remove any lingering debris, preventing long-term damage and ensuring the engine runs smoothly.

Front-End Damage
- The issue: Upon closer inspection, we found previous crash damage that had been poorly repaired (or not at all). The front bumper was concealing structural misalignment and weakened mounting points.
- Our fix: We realigned the front structure, reinforced weak points, and repaired the bumper properly — making sure the van was safe, sturdy, and ready for the road.
Dangerous Tyres — A Blowout Waiting to Happen
- The issue: One tyre was dangerously split, and the others were barely above the legal tread limit — putting the van at risk of a blowout or loss of grip, especially in wet conditions.
- Our fix: We fitted a brand-new set of premium tyres, perfectly balanced and aligned for safety and performance.
Worn Suspension Components — Compromised Handling
- The issue: The anti-roll bar links and suspension bushes were completely perished, reducing stability and making the van unpredictable to drive.
- Our fix: We replaced all worn components with OEM-quality parts, restoring the Bongo’s handling and making it safe to navigate corners and rough roads.
