Diagnosis: A Catastrophic Engine Failure
A van from Lancashire arrived via recovery truck after signs of overheating and power loss. The issue ran deeper than a blown head gasket; the cylinder head was fused to the engine block. Not repairable, but absolutely fixable with the right replacement
The overheating had been severe. So severe, in fact, that it had completely melted the cylinder head to the block. This was not a repairable failure. The engine was beyond saving.
It was a hard blow for the customer, but we reassured them that all was not lost. We could still save the van. It just needed a new heart.
Choosing and Installing a Replacement Engine
We sourced a clean, low-mileage 2.5TD engine with just 70,000 kilometres on the clock. The transplant process was comprehensive. We wanted this van not only back on the road, but better than ever.
We supplied and fitted:
- Two new coolant temperature sensors
- A brand new thermostat
- A complete timing belt kit and water pump
- Rocker cover gasket
- Fresh oil and filter
- New air filter
- New fuel filter
- Coolant flush, fresh coolant, and a coolant auto bleed kit
We also relocated the fuse box and rewired sections of the engine bay where we discovered dangerous previous modifications. Safety and reliability are always our top priority.
A Cooling System Built to Last
While refitting the new engine, we spotted a major issue that would have caused trouble down the road. The previous radiator had been swapped out for a slimline version that was not designed for Bongos. This would have restricted cooling capacity and likely led to further overheating in the future.
We immediately replaced it with a proper, genuine Mazda Bongo radiator to ensure maximum cooling performance and long-term peace of mind.
Back Where It Belongs
With the new engine fully fitted, fluids replaced, cooling system secured, and electrics rewired safely, this Bongo is now back on the road and ready for more adventures. It may have faced a catastrophic failure, but thanks to a complete heart transplant and a lot of love, it has a second chance.
