A Labour of Love for a Bongo in Trouble
This Mazda Bongo came to us in desperate need of help. What followed was a Mazda Bongo full restoration that pushed our team to their limits – but also delivered one of our most rewarding results to date.
Despite the challenges ahead, the customer placed their trust in the Mazda Bongo Auto Centre team, and we promised to bring it back from the brink. What followed was one of the most extensive and heartfelt transformations we’ve ever undertaken.

A Hidden History of Rust
After our initial 101-point inspection, it became quickly clear that the corrosion was more than just surface-deep. Both front cross members needed welding, and all four sills, both inner and outer, were rusted beyond repair. The chassis outriggers, rear wheel arches, and even the rear cross-member corners had suffered significantly.
We began by cutting away every piece of compromised metal, ensuring that only strong, safe material remained.

Welding: A Closer Look at the Process
Step 1: Cutout
Rust removal starts with precision. We don’t just patch over the top—we cut out the affected sections cleanly to eliminate every trace of corrosion.
Step 2: Spot Welding
New panels are carefully aligned and spot-welded into place, recreating the factory joins and maintaining strength across the vehicle.
Step 3: Seam Welding
For long-lasting protection and structural integrity, each panel is fully seam-welded, leaving no weak spots. This approach ensures a bond as strong as the original bodywork, ready to stand the test of time.
Every step in this Mazda Bongo full restoration was completed with safety, longevity, and attention to detail in mind.

Major Accident Repair: Rear Quarter Panel Rebuild
The real challenge with this restoration was the driver-side rear quarter panel. The original panel had been crushed in an accident and was beyond repair. Rather than attempt to hide the damage, we took the correct route: drilling out all the original factory spot welds and carefully grafting in a donor panel.
This grafting process required exceptional precision, aligning panel curves, seams, and fitting points perfectly. Once in place, we repainted the entire side in matching factory silver to seamlessly blend the repair with the original finish.

Bodywork and Paintwork
While structural integrity is vital, the visual result matters too, especially to a proud Bongo owner. Once all the welding was complete, we set about repairing surface imperfections across both sides of the van. This included smoothing out blemishes from years of wear and tear and preparing the surface for a full repaint.
We resprayed both sides of the van in beautiful, matching silver, restoring it to its original glory. Every corner was carefully masked, every panel expertly coated, and the end result was a gleaming finish that looked as though it had just rolled out of the factory.
Despite the added time and complexity, we carried out far more paintwork than originally quoted, at no extra cost to the customer.

Unseen But Essential
With the outer work complete, we moved on to crucial details: replacing tyres, polishing headlamps, and cleaning brake lines to ensure a pass at MOT. A full machine polish helped restore a mirror finish to the paintwork, and we applied a complete underseal to protect the renewed chassis.
What many wouldn’t see, but every Bongo owner should appreciate, is the hours spent refurbishing the inner wheel arches, cross members, and structural reinforcements that lie beneath the surface. It’s here that safety lives, and our team left no corner untouched.
Complimentary Finishing Touches
We always like to add something extra. New floor mats with the Mazda Bongo logo were added as a finishing gift from us to the owner. A 12-month MOT was supplied with no advisories, and the extensive undersealing work was completed at no charge.
Back On The Road With Confidence
This Mazda Bongo came dangerously close to being written off, but thanks to careful planning, skilled craftsmanship, and a huge amount of dedication, it has not only been saved, it has been transformed.
The owner now has a structurally sound, MOT-passed, and beautifully finished Bongo, ready to create memories once again.
It’s one more successful Mazda Bongo full restoration that proves why owners trust us with their beloved vans.
