A Mazda Bongo Import Built Around One Customer’s Dream Specification

The best Mazda Bongo is not always the one already sitting on the forecourt.

Sometimes, it starts with a conversation. The customer brings their wish list, travel plans and preferred style. We find the right import, prepare it properly and build it to suit exactly how they want to use it.

That is what happened with this 2003 Mazda Bongo 2.5 TD Aero.

Through our Your Van Your Way service, the customer pre-ordered a fresh import with a panoramic roof, ultra-high pop top and a very clear brief. They wanted a spacious five-seat camper with no kitchen, an extra-wide bed, modern power systems and a smart silver-and-black exterior.

The result is a Bongo that is completely personal to its owner, from the custom interior layout to the smallest gloss-black styling details.

Starting With the Right Fresh Import

This 2003 Mazda Bongo 2.5 TD Aero was sourced and imported specifically for the customer.

It is a facelift model, complete with honeycomb grilles and Xenon headlamps, and arrived in Grade 4.5 condition. That is an excellent starting point for a fresh import. However, even a high-grade vehicle can have small cosmetic imperfections from its life in Japan.

In this case, there was minor paint fade and lacquer peel on parts of the bodywork. Rather than leave those areas untouched, we gave the van a full respray in its original Mazda silver.

This allowed us to deliver the clean, properly finished base that a bespoke build deserves.

A Full Respray in Original Mazda Silver

The bodywork was fully prepared and repainted in original Mazda silver.

Keeping the original colour retained the clean, factory-inspired look the customer wanted. At the same time, it gave the vehicle a consistent finish from front to rear and removed the minor cosmetic issues present when it arrived.

The black styling details were then carefully added to create contrast against the silver paintwork.

The lower bumper sections around the fog lamp surrounds were finished in gloss black, while the grille, mirrors, pop top edging and rear spoiler were all finished to match. Black badges and new Mazda decals completed the exterior.

The result is sharp, modern and unmistakably individual, without losing the character of the Bongo Aero.

Gloss-Black Refurbished 18-Inch Alloy Wheels

The exterior transformation continued with a set of 18-inch alloy wheels, fully refurbished in gloss black.

The wheels work perfectly with the black grille, mirrors, pop top edging and spoiler. Together, these details give the Bongo a more purposeful look while keeping the overall design clean and cohesive.

It is a great example of how a customer’s colour choices can turn an already smart import into something that feels genuinely one of a kind.

An Ultra-High Pop Top With Panoramic Roof

This Bongo was specified with an ultra-high pop top and panoramic roof.

The raised roof gives the interior a more open feel when parked up, with useful standing room for day-to-day campervan use. It also creates a more flexible space for trips away, whether the van is being used for a weekend break or a longer touring holiday.

The panoramic roof adds to the light and airy atmosphere inside, helping the Bongo feel larger without compromising the compact size that makes it so practical on the road.

A Five-Seat Conversion With No Kitchen

This customer did not want a traditional kitchen conversion.

Instead, they wanted maximum floor space, a larger sleeping area and the ability to carry five people with proper seat belts. We therefore designed the interior around an open-plan layout, rather than fitting a kitchen pod.

The van retains five travelling seats with five seat belts and features our exclusive ultra-wide rock and roll bed at the rear.

This layout creates a much larger usable floor area than a conventional kitchen conversion. It also gives the owner a generous bed when it is time to settle down for the night.

It is a brilliant option for owners who value passenger space, room for equipment or a more open interior above all else.

Practical Touring Features Without the Kitchen Pod

Although there is no kitchen pod, this Bongo remains well equipped for travelling and camping.

An under-seat fridge freezer provides useful cold storage, while the 240V hookup and power sockets allow the owner to connect to mains power when staying on a campsite.

A leisure battery and split-charge system support the 12V setup, with multiple USB charging points available in the rear. Reading lights have also been fitted on both the left and right sides of the rear sleeping area.

This gives the owner the electrical features they need, while preserving the open space that formed such an important part of the original brief.

Solar Power for Off-Grid Camping

A large solar panel was fitted alongside an MPPT fast-charge controller.

This helps keep the leisure system topped up while away from mains power, making the Bongo a more flexible option for off-grid camping and longer stays away from a campsite.

The solar setup works alongside the leisure battery and split-charge system to support the rear USB points, lighting and fridge freezer. It is a practical addition for anyone who wants more freedom in how and where they travel.

Two Swivel Seats Create a Social Living Space

Both the driver and passenger seats are fitted with swivel bases.

When parked up, the front seats can be turned around to become part of the living space. This creates a much larger seating area and makes the Bongo feel far more open, especially with the clear floor space created by the kitchen-free layout.

It is a simple change that has a major effect on how the van feels to use. The owner gains a comfortable, social space without sacrificing the five-seat travelling setup.

Media, Navigation and Easier Manoeuvring

The Bongo has also been fitted with a modern media player, including Apple CarPlay, Bluetooth connectivity and a reversing camera.

These features make everyday driving easier and bring useful modern technology to a classic campervan. Apple CarPlay allows access to compatible navigation, calls and music, while the reversing camera is particularly helpful when parking or manoeuvring on a campsite.

Thorough Mechanical Preparation Before Handover

A Your Van Your Way build is not only about the conversion and paintwork.

Before this Bongo was handed over, it received a full programme of mechanical preparation. We fitted a new timing belt kit and water pump, along with a new coolant alarm.

The van also received:

  • Engine service
  • Gearbox service
  • Differential service
  • Cooling-system service
  • Cooling-system flush
  • New thermostat
  • New temperature sensors
  • Fresh antifreeze
  • New brake pads
  • Fresh underseal protection

The underseal provides an extra layer of protection for a freshly imported vehicle, helping preserve the underside for the years ahead.

Warranty and After-Sales Support

This low-mileage Bongo comes with an 18-month warranty, 12 months MOT and three years of free underseal top-ups.

The after-sales package also includes a free MOT the following year. Any work required for that MOT will be covered by Mazda Bongo Auto Centre, excluding normal wear-and-tear items such as tyres.

It is a package designed to give the owner confidence long after collection day.
