Not every story we share is about a restoration.
Sometimes it is about protecting someone from a very costly mistake.
A customer recently arrived at Mazda Bongo Auto Centre after purchasing a Mazda Bongo, believing it was road-ready. Before handing over their life savings, they had made one clear request to the garage selling the van.
The vehicle had to pass an MOT.
The seller confirmed that it had. With the certificate issued, the customer went ahead with the purchase.
However, after collecting the van, they wanted reassurance. So they brought it to us for one of our free Mazda Bongo inspections, simply looking for peace of mind that everything underneath was as good as they had been told.
Sadly, the inspection told a very different story.

A Routine Inspection That Revealed Serious Problems
From the outside, the van looked respectable enough. The paintwork was tidy, and there were no obvious warning signs.
However, once the vehicle was properly inspected by a specialist who works with Bongos every day, the true condition became clear.
The level of structural corrosion underneath the van was severe. In fact, the condition of several key areas meant the vehicle should never have passed an MOT in the first place.
This was not minor rust or cosmetic deterioration. These were structural components that required significant welding repairs just to make the vehicle safe and roadworthy.
The customer had unknowingly purchased a vehicle that was nowhere near ready for the road.
The Extent of the Structural Corrosion
As we continued the inspection, the list of required repairs quickly grew.
Major structural welding work would have been required across multiple areas of the chassis and body, including:
• Near side inner sill rear requiring welding repair
• Near side inner sill front requiring full replacement
• Near side chassis outrigger repair
• Near side rear chassis tub repair
• Near side rear crossmember corner requiring full replacement
• Near side rear crossmember centre repair
• Offside rear crossmember corner repair
• Offside rear outer sill repair
• Offside rear inner sill repair
Each of these areas plays a vital role in the vehicle’s structural integrity. Left unresolved, they would pose serious safety concerns.

Mechanical Issues Discovered During Inspection
Unfortunately, the structural corrosion was not the only problem.
Several mechanical faults were also present, which would have required attention before the van could be considered safe to drive. These included:
• Rear anti-roll bar bush replacement
• Coolant T pipe leak repair
• Steering rack leaking and requiring replacement
• Offside front brake caliper replacement
• Front brake discs and pads replacement
• Missing rear fog light and centre brake light
• Rocker cover gasket leak
• Auxiliary belt replacement
When combined with the welding work required underneath, the repair costs would have quickly climbed into the thousands.

Helping the Customer Reach the Right Outcome
No one likes delivering news like this, especially to someone who has just invested their savings into a vehicle they were excited about.
However, honesty always comes first.
Once the van’s full condition had been documented, we helped the customer take the appropriate steps and raise the concerns with the MOT testing centre responsible for issuing the certificate and the garage that sold them the van.
After reviewing the findings, the MOT test centre agreed that the vehicle should not have been issued with a pass certificate in its condition.
The result was the best possible outcome under difficult circumstances.
The customer received a full refund for the vehicle.
What could have been a devastating financial loss turned into a huge relief.
Why a Mazda Bongo Inspection Is So Important
Mazda Bongos are fantastic vehicles, but most are now more than twenty years old. Rust can develop in hidden areas that are difficult to spot without specialist knowledge of the vehicle.
A general inspection might miss these problems. However, a specialist who works on Bongos every day knows exactly where to look and what warning signs to check.
In this case, a simple inspection prevented the customer from being left with thousands of pounds in repair bills.
That is exactly why inspections matter.
