Mazda Bongo MOT Welding and Bronze Restoration with Custom Pearl Flip Paint

A Rust-Ridden Arrival with an MOT on the Line

When this Mazda Bongo rolled into our Saltney workshop, it was dangerously close to MOT failure. At first glance, the structural rust looked extensive, raising concerns about the vehicle’s long-term future. But beneath the corrosion was a van worth saving, and a customer ready to invest in something special. What followed was a complete transformation, both in safety and style.

Mazda Bongo Welding Repairs to Restore Structural Integrity

The first step in the restoration was to address the most urgent issue: the corroded sills. Both the nearside and offside front inner sills had rusted through and were no longer fit for the road. We carefully cut out the damaged sections and fabricated replacement panels by hand, welding them in place to match the original manufacturer’s strength and structure.

Further corrosion was discovered at the nearside rear outer sill and the rear crossmember corner. These sections were also cut out and rebuilt using our tried and tested welding techniques. Once completed, the vehicle’s backbone was restored, giving it a solid platform to build on.

Chassis Tubs: Honest Advice for Future Repairs

During a thorough inspection of the underbody, we identified heavy corrosion on both rear chassis tubs. While these sections had scraped through the last MOT, it was clear they wouldn’t survive another. We made temporary reinforcements where possible and, crucially, gave the customer full visibility and a realistic timeline for future repair.

At Mazda Bongo Auto Centre, our approach is always built on honesty. We believe it’s better to plan a repair with the customer than surprise them later with a problem that could have been prevented.

Mazda Bongo Underseal Protection and Suspension Revival

With the welding complete, we turned our focus to long-term protection. The underside of the van was carefully cleaned down and fully undersealed to defend against future corrosion. Every inch of exposed metal was treated, giving this Bongo a protective barrier against the elements.

At the same time, all suspension components were removed, cleaned, and professionally repainted in a matte black finish. This not only improved their longevity but gave the undercarriage a neat, uniform look. As a final touch, we polished the headlights to boost visibility — a free addition to help the van shine a little brighter.

Mazda Bongo Custom Paintwork: A Two-Tone Finish with Personality

Next came the standout stage of the restoration: the paintwork. As part of our Bronze Mazda Bongo Restoration Package, we installed new genuine rear wheel arches and carried out complete lower bodywork repairs. But the real magic happened in the paint booth.

The customer selected a bold pearl flip orange for the lower half of the van, a colour that shifts tone with light and movement. This was paired with the original factory grey on the upper half, resulting in a high-contrast two-tone finish that oozes character.

To complete the look, we resprayed the bumpers and added colour-coded touches to the wing mirrors, honeycomb grille, and rear spoiler. The van now had more than just a refreshed exterior; it had an identity.

Final Touches Before Handover

As the final details came together, we made sure the handover experience matched the transformation. Brand-new number plates were fitted, and a fresh set of complimentary floor mats lifted the interior. The van left with a full twelve-month MOT and no advisories, aside from the known chassis tub work already scheduled for the future.

What began as a van on the brink of retirement had become something far greater: a road-ready Bongo with style, strength, and serious personality.

A Great Mazda Bongo Ready for the Road — and Ready to Impress

This Mazda Bongo is now everything its owner could have hoped for. Structurally sound, beautifully finished, and protected for the road ahead, it’s a brilliant example of what’s possible with the right craftsmanship.
