Not every customer is looking for a fresh import with a brand-new conversion already fitted.
Sometimes, the right Mazda Bongo is already in our stock. It may have an immaculate chassis, low mileage and a strong mechanical starting point, but need a little restoration work or a completely different camper layout to become the owner’s ideal van.
That was exactly the case with this late-model 2006 Mazda Bongo.
The customer came to Mazda Bongo Auto Centre with a clear budget, a wish list and one important requirement: they wanted a rear conversion. We had a low-mileage Bongo that was an excellent foundation, but it had an existing side conversion that was not right for their plans.
Rather than asking the customer to settle for something that was only nearly right, we rebuilt it around their specification.
Finding the Right Bongo for the Build
We keep a selection of Mazda Bongos in stock, including vehicles with excellent chassis condition that are ready for the next stage of their story.
These vans are not always listed as fully completed campervans. Some are strong base vehicles that can be restored, converted and personalised to suit the right owner. This gives customers far more choice than simply selecting from the finished vans currently available on the forecourt.
For this project, we started with a low-mileage 2006 Mazda Bongo. As one of the later models, it gave the customer the modern, well-kept base vehicle they wanted, while leaving room in the budget to make the conversion their own.
Replacing the Side Conversion With a Rear Conversion
The Bongo arrived with a side conversion already installed. However, the customer preferred the layout and open living space created by a rear conversion.
We removed the existing side conversion and replaced it with a bespoke rear kitchen layout.
A rear conversion makes excellent use of the full width of the back of the Bongo. It creates a practical cooking and storage area while leaving the rest of the cabin available for seating, sleeping and relaxing. It is a particularly good choice for owners who want a clean, spacious interior and a campervan designed around their own way of travelling.
This rear conversion includes a practical kitchen area, fridge, 240V hookup, multiple USB charging points and a leisure battery with split-charge system.
Every feature was selected to meet the customer’s requirements while keeping the finished build within the budget they had set.

Prepared for Weekends Away and Longer Trips
A good campervan conversion should be more than something that looks smart in photographs. It should make life away from home easier.
The rear kitchen provides a practical space for preparing food and keeping essentials close at hand. The fitted fridge gives the owner useful cold storage, while the 240V hookup provides mains power when staying on a campsite.
For more flexibility, we fitted a leisure battery and split-charge system. This helps keep the camper’s electrical setup supported while travelling, and the multiple USB charging points make it easy to keep everyday devices powered.
The van also received a media player, helping bring modern connectivity and entertainment to both daily driving and longer journeys.
Pop Top Space for More Adventures
A pop top roof was fitted as part of the build, giving the Bongo more usable interior space when parked up.
A pop top can make a huge difference to how a Mazda Bongo feels on a trip. It creates more headroom, opens up the living area and gives owners greater flexibility when using the van for weekends away or longer touring holidays.
It is one of the best ways to turn a capable Mazda Bongo into a more versatile campervan, without losing the compact size that makes these vehicles so easy to enjoy on the road.
A Personalised Exterior in Blue Pearl Turquoise
The customer chose a blue pearl turquoise finish for the lower half of the van.
This gave the Bongo a fresh, individual appearance that was very much their own. The front and rear bumpers, spoilers and grille were colour coded to match, creating a smart and consistent finish around the vehicle.
New Mazda decals completed the exterior transformation, while the lower-half colour brings a distinctive touch without overpowering the original character of the van.
It is a great example of how a customer-led colour choice can make a Bongo feel genuinely personal.
Gloss-Black Wheels and All-Terrain Tyres
The alloy wheels were fully refurbished in gloss black and fitted with brand-new all-terrain tyres.
The new wheel finish complements the blue pearl turquoise lower half beautifully, giving the Bongo a stronger, more purposeful look. The all-terrain tyres also suit the kind of adventures these vans are built for, whether that means everyday journeys, campsites or trips further afield.
Details such as wheels, tyres and colour-coded exterior parts can completely change how a Bongo presents, especially when they are chosen to work together as part of a wider build.
Refreshed Details Inside and Out
The finishing work continued inside the Bongo, where the carpets were refurbished to bring a cleaner, more cared-for feel to the cabin.
New Mazda decals, the gloss-black refurbished wheels and the colour-coded exterior details ensured that the whole van felt connected. Nothing was selected at random. Each element was chosen to create a campervan that matched the customer’s vision and budget.
The result is a late-model Mazda Bongo that looks fresh, drives away with a modern touring setup and has a rear conversion designed specifically around its new owner.

This project is an important reminder that the perfect Mazda Bongo may not be sitting in stock exactly as you imagine it.
You may see a van we have sold previously and like the colour, conversion layout or equipment. You may find one of our current stock vehicles that has the right chassis, mileage and budget, but not the exact interior setup you want.
That does not mean you need to keep searching elsewhere.
