A Mazda Bongo can often need more than a fresh coat of paint to feel right again.
This Bongo arrived for one of our Bronze Packages, with corrosion and wear affecting several important areas. The project called for structural welding, replacement body sections, braking and suspension work, followed by thorough underside protection.
Once the foundations were right, it was finished with a lower-half respray in SVR Blue, giving this much-loved van a fresh, smart new chapter.
Starting With the Areas That Matter Most
Every restoration starts with a careful look at the vehicle as a whole.
The lower body and underside of a Mazda Bongo deserve particular attention, as corrosion can develop in areas that are not always immediately obvious. On this van, the work included a replacement nearside rear outer sill, a new nearside side skirt and mounting bracket, and a full offside rear crossmember replacement.
These are not cosmetic repairs. They are important structural jobs that help restore strength, safety and long-term confidence in the vehicle.
New Rear Wheel Arches and Lower Body Repairs
As part of the Bronze Package, we fitted new genuine rear wheel arches.
The lower bodywork was also addressed throughout, ensuring that the areas requiring attention were properly repaired and prepared. Replacing affected sections rather than simply covering over issues gives the finished restoration the right foundation.
A proper Mazda Bongo restoration should protect the vehicle from the inside out. That means making sure the bodywork is solid and correctly prepared before the paintwork begins.
Replacing the Offside Rear Crossmember
The offside rear crossmember required full replacement.
Crossmembers form an important part of the vehicle’s structure, and corrosion in this area should never be overlooked. This work involved removing the affected section and fitting a replacement properly, ready for long-term protection.
It is the kind of repair that will not always be visible once the project is complete. However, it is among the most valuable work carried out, because it helps preserve the strength and future of the Bongo.
Brakes and Suspension Refreshed
Alongside the structural work, we renewed key mechanical components to improve safety and driving confidence.
New rear brake discs and pads were supplied and fitted. We also fitted new front shock absorbers on both sides.
These jobs make a meaningful difference to how a Bongo performs on the road. Fresh brakes help provide dependable stopping power, while new front shock absorbers support a more composed and comfortable drive.
Combining these upgrades with the restoration work means the van returns to its owner feeling renewed in more ways than one.
Comprehensive Underseal Protection
Once the welding and mechanical work had been completed, the vehicle was comprehensively prepared for fresh underseal.
The chassis and underside were rubbed down and treated before underseal was applied. The suspension components were also prepared and painted matte black to match.
This is a vital stage in a Mazda Bongo restoration. Underseal helps protect vulnerable areas from road spray, moisture and the conditions that can lead to corrosion returning. It also gives the underside a far cleaner, more finished appearance.
Paint Preparation Before the Final Finish
With the lower body repairs complete and the underside protected, the Bongo was ready for paint preparation.
This stage brings together the new wheel arches, repaired sill area, side skirt and lower bodywork. Careful preparation is what allows the finished colour to sit evenly across the vehicle and gives the restoration a properly cohesive result.
The front and rear bumpers were repainted as part of the Bronze Package, completing the refreshed lower-body appearance.
Finished in Lower-Half SVR Blue
The final transformation came with a lower-half respray in SVR Blue.
The fresh colour gives this Bongo a sharp, contemporary look while allowing the upper body to retain its original character. Paired with the repainted bumpers, the result is a clean finish that highlights the care and structural work completed beneath it.
The important thing is that this is not simply a visual makeover. The SVR Blue finish is the final chapter in a project built around proper repair, protection and preparation.
