This Mazda Bongo arrived at our workshop after an unexpected breakdown in Holywell. The owner contacted us immediately, and we arranged recovery straight back to our workshop so we could assess the damage properly.
From the start, we approached the job methodically. First, we tested the cooling system. Almost immediately, it became clear that the system was pressurising abnormally. That pointed us towards a serious internal fault.
Diagnosing The Head Gasket Failure
As we continued testing, we identified the cause. The head gasket had failed between the coolant and oil jackets. As a result of that failure, combustion pressure entered the cooling system.
To confirm our diagnosis, we drained the engine oil. Unfortunately, the oil was heavily contaminated with coolant. At that point, the extent of the internal damage became clear.
When coolant and oil mix, lubrication breaks down. Therefore, internal wear accelerates rapidly. While head gasket repairs are sometimes viable, in this case, the contamination posed a greater risk to the engine’s longevity.

Choosing The Right Solution
After discussing the findings openly with the customer, we outlined the options. Rather than rebuilding an engine that had already been contaminated with coolant, the owner chose a more secure long-term solution.
We sourced a low-mileage replacement engine with approximately 70,000 miles and began the installation process.
This approach effectively reset the mechanical foundation of the van.
Full Reliability Treatment Before Installation
However, we never install a replacement engine without preparing it properly first.
Before final installation, we completed a full preventative service and upgrade package, including:
- New timing belt kit
- New water pump
- New camshaft oil seals
- New crankshaft oil seal
- New rocker cover gasket
- Oil and filter replacement
- Air filter replacement
- Fuel filter replacement
- New coolant temperature sensors, both two-pin and single-pin
- Fresh antifreeze and coolant
Because of this additional work, the replacement engine did not simply go in as it arrived. Instead, it received a full reliability refresh.

Cooling System Support And Protection
Since the original failure involved coolant contamination, we paid particular attention to the cooling system.
We supplied and fitted a radiator to ensure strong coolant flow and proper temperature control. Cooling integrity is critical on a Mazda Bongo, so it made sense to reinforce this area before returning the vehicle to the road.
Warranty For Peace Of Mind
Importantly, this Mazda Bongo replacement engine comes with a 12-month or 10,000-mile warranty.
That warranty reflects our confidence in the work we carried out and provides the owner with reassurance moving forward.
Back On The Road After A Serious Failure
Head gasket failure can feel like the end of the road for some owners. However, when handled properly and diagnosed correctly, it does not have to be.
By recovering the van quickly, testing methodically and recommending the right long-term solution, we were able to return this Bongo to the road stronger than before.
The owner now drives away with a low-mileage engine, refreshed service components and renewed confidence in their vehicle.
