Saving a Much Loved Mazda Bongo the Right Way

Some Vans Mean More Than Just Transport

This Mazda Bongo restoration and welding repair project was about far more than simply getting another van through an MOT.

For the owner, this Bongo had become part of everyday life. The trips, the memories, and the time invested into it all meant one thing. Letting it deteriorate was never really an option.

However, like many Bongos of this age, time had started to catch up with it underneath.

What looked like a usable van on the surface was hiding structural corrosion and mechanical issues that needed proper attention before they became something much worse.

The Problems Beneath the Surface

Once we began inspecting the van properly, the extent of the work became clear.

Both inner and outer sills required full replacement due to corrosion. Structural areas around the rear suspension chassis leg and the rear chassis tub also needed welding repairs to meet MOT safety standards.

These are not cosmetic issues. They are the kinds of structural faults that determine whether a van has a future.

Because of this, the only option was to repair everything properly rather than attempt temporary fixes.

Rebuilding the Structure Properly

To begin this Mazda Bongo restoration and welding repair, we removed all affected metalwork and cut everything back to solid material.

New inner and outer sills were then fully replaced, restoring strength to both sides of the van.

At the rear, welding repairs were carried out to the suspension chassis leg and chassis tub to ensure the vehicle was structurally sound once again.

This work forms the foundation of the entire build. Without it, nothing else matters.

Protecting the Van for the Future

Once the welding repairs were complete, attention turned to long-term protection.

The underside of the van received a comprehensive rubdown and a full underseal treatment. Suspension components were also refinished in matte black, helping restore their appearance while adding another layer of protection against corrosion.

As a result, the underside now looks cleaner, stronger and far better protected moving forward.

Bringing the Exterior Back to Life

With the structural work complete, the van then received our Bronze Mazda Bongo Restoration Package.

This included:

  • New genuine rear wheel arches
  • Full lower half respray in the owner’s chosen colour
  • Front and rear bumpers repainted
  • Lower bodywork imperfections addressed throughout

The transformation completely changed the van’s look.

What had once felt tired and worn now looked fresh, solid, and properly cared for again.

Mechanical Work to Match the Restoration

A restoration like this is never just about appearance.

The van also received a full service, including:

  • Engine oil and filter
  • Fuel filter
  • Gearbox and differential oil checks
  • Brake inspection
  • Coolant system inspection

In addition, we repaired a coolant leak caused by a failing T-piece and supplied and fitted an auto-bleed kit to improve cooling system reliability.

The air conditioning compressor pump was also replaced and re-gassed, ensuring the van remained comfortable to use in warmer weather.

Fixing the Smaller Details That Matter

Some of the most important parts of a restoration are the smaller jobs that often get overlooked.

A faulty headlight bulb affecting full beam operation was replaced. Rear anti-roll bar bushes were renewed, while a missing turbo clamp was supplied and fitted.

We also freed a seized turbo actuator, restoring proper movement and performance.

Individually, these may seem like small issues. Together, they make the difference between a van that simply runs and one that feels properly sorted.

More Than Just Another Repair

This Mazda Bongo restoration and welding repair was never about cutting corners or doing just enough to pass an MOT.

It was about preserving a van that genuinely mattered to its owner.

These are the jobs we enjoy most. Taking something that still means the world to somebody and giving it the future it deserves.

Ready for Many More Adventures

By the end of the project, the transformation was obvious.

Structurally solid, mechanically refreshed and visually brought back to life, this Bongo is now ready for many more years on the road.

More importantly, the owner can continue making memories in a van they genuinely love, knowing it has been properly repaired.
