Every Mazda Bongo deserves a chance to keep exploring, even those that arrive looking worse for wear. This particular van arrived in a very sorry state. Years of use had taken their toll, with visible corrosion, multiple fluid leaks, and bodywork that had seen its best days long ago. But we knew that with time, skill, and care, this Bongo could be rescued and restored to full health.
Bringing It Back from the Edge
The first step was a detailed inspection to uncover the full extent of the damage. Beneath the surface, we found a range of structural issues that would have caused most garages to give up. Instead, we rolled up our sleeves and got to work, determined to give this Bongo a fresh lease of life.
Our team began with essential welding and fabrication work, including a near-side front inner wing repair, a near-side rear inner sill replacement, and a near-side rear full cross-member corner rebuild. Each section was carefully cut, fabricated, and welded to factory standards to restore full strength and integrity.
The offside front inner sill was also welded and repaired, followed by the replacement of the offside front inner wheel arch and lower suspension mount. To complete the structural phase, we rebuilt the offside front inner wheel arch suspension point, ensuring every weld was neat, strong, and fully protected against future corrosion.

Essential Mechanical Work and Leak Repairs
Once the welding was complete, attention turned to the leaks that had plagued the van. A replacement coolant T-pipe was fitted to eliminate coolant loss, and a new gearbox sump gasket was installed to fix a persistent transmission leak.
We carried out a comprehensive service, including replacement of the engine oil and filter, fuel filter, gearbox oil, and differential oil. The system was then pressure-tested to verify the absence of any remaining coolant leaks. Every component was cleaned and inspected before reassembly, ensuring long-term reliability.

MOT Preparation and Underbody Protection
With the major repairs complete, we performed a comprehensive rubdown and underseal across the entire underside of the van. This process prevents corrosion and provides long-term protection against moisture and salt, helping the bodywork stay solid for years to come.
We also replaced the rocker cover gasket, carried out nearside front crossmember repairs, and completed nearside rear chassis welding to ensure the vehicle would pass MOT inspection without issue.
When it came time for its test, the Bongo sailed through with a 12-month MOT and no advisories, a significant achievement considering it had arrived just weeks earlier.

Another Mazda Bongo Saved
When this van first came through our doors, it looked tired and unloved. Today, it stands strong, fully serviced, structurally sound, and ready for many more miles on the road. Restorations like this one are a reminder of why we do what we do. Every Mazda Bongo has a story, and with the right care, that story can continue for years to come.
