Not every van that comes into our workshop is just a vehicle. For some owners, their Bongo is a part of the family, filled with memories of road trips, family holidays, and adventures. This was exactly the case when a customer brought us their cherished Mazda Bongo.
Despite the van’s extreme sentimental value, it was clear from the start that it was in bad shape, showing multiple signs of advanced deterioration. After a full inspection, we had to deliver some tough news—the Bongo was beyond economical repair. But for this owner, parting ways with it was simply not an option. That’s when we knew we had to go all-in to restore this Bongo back to its former glory.
Bringing the Bongo Back from the Brink
The restoration process was an extensive one, requiring us to replace many critical structural elements. We started by cutting out and replacing the severely corroded inner and outer sills. Both rear floor sections and inner and outer arches were beyond saving, so we installed fresh panels in their place. We also had to replace the full front and rear cross members, along with the front chassis outriggers, ensuring the Bongo’s strength and integrity.
To protect the remaining parts of the chassis and suspension, we shot blasted every remaining component, removing any lingering rust and preparing it for the future. Once cleaned up, the entire underbody received a full underseal to protect it from the elements and ensure the rust would not return.
Attention to Detail: Painting and Refurbishing
Once the structural work was done, we turned our attention to the aesthetics. Every dent and scratch was repaired, prepping the Bongo for its fresh new look. The owner chose a beautiful two-tone paint scheme of Green over Silent Silver, with the pop-top roof in matching silver to make the van stand out. This combination was not only stunning but gave the van a modern twist while maintaining its classic charm.
We also took care of the finer details, refurbishing all plastic trims, wiper arms, and other external fittings to look as good as new. Finally, we applied fresh body and roof decals, giving this Bongo the perfect finishing touch.
Ready for the Road: MOT and Final Checks
No restoration is complete without ensuring the van is safe and road-ready. After all the structural, aesthetic, and mechanical work was completed, we conducted a thorough MOT inspection. We’re proud to say the van passed with flying colors—12 months MOT with no advisories. The Bongo was officially ready to hit the road again.
The Result: A Transformed Van and a Happy Owner
Seeing the transformation of this Bongo was incredible, but what made it even more special was the reaction of the owner. They were absolutely overjoyed to see their beloved family member brought back to life, restored to a condition they could be proud of once again. It’s moments like these that remind us why we do what we do—restoring not just vehicles, but the memories and adventures they represent.
