Restoring a Bongo the Right Way
This Mazda Bongo Bronze restoration in Riviera Blue was all about preserving a van that still had plenty of life left in it.
Like many Bongos that have been properly enjoyed over the years, the signs of age had begun to appear around the lower bodywork and underneath the van. Corrosion had begun to take hold in key structural areas, while the paintwork had lost its clean finish.
However, rather than covering things up or taking shortcuts, the decision was made to restore the van properly and give it the attention it deserved.
Starting with the Structure
Before any cosmetic work could begin, the structural repairs needed to be addressed first.
Several key areas underneath the van required welding repairs to meet MOT standards safely.
This included:
- Offside rear crossmember corner repairs
- Nearside front chassis outrigger and inner sill repairs
- Offside front chassis outrigger repairs
These are important structural sections that play a major role in the strength and long-term integrity of the vehicle.
Because of this, all repairs were carried out properly before moving on to the visual transformation.
Protecting the Underside for the Future
Once the welding work was complete, the van received a comprehensive rub down and underseal treatment.
This process helps protect the underside against future corrosion while also dramatically improving the overall appearance underneath the van.
Suspension components were rubbed down and refinished in matte black to match, giving the underside a much cleaner and more cared-for appearance.
As a result, the van is now far better protected for years of future use.
The Bronze Restoration Package
With the structural work complete, the transformation could really begin.

The package included:
- New genuine Mazda rear wheel arches
- Full lower half respray
- Front and rear bumpers repainted
- Lower bodywork imperfections addressed throughout
This process completely refreshed the van’s appearance while addressing the common problem areas Bongos often suffer from.
Finished in Riviera Blue
For the lower half respray, the owner chose Riviera Blue, easily one of our best-selling and most recognisable colours.
Paired with the original white upper half, the result is a classic two-tone finish that suits the Bongo’s shape perfectly.
Riviera Blue works especially well because it gives the van a clean, modern appearance while still keeping the character that makes these vans so popular.
The contrast between the bright white upper section and the deep Riviera Blue lower half completely transformed the vehicle’s look.
Keeping the Character of the Van
One of the nicest parts of this build was retaining some of the original styling details that gave the van its personality.
The chrome mirrors and front and rear grille trim were kept in place, helping preserve the vehicle’s character while complementing the fresh paintwork beautifully.
Additional repair work was carried out around the windscreen area to ensure the finish matched the rest of the build.
Because of this, the final result feels fresh and restored without losing the original van’s identity.
