Some vans arrive with a story that deserves to continue. This Mazda Bongo had been part of its owner’s life for years, carrying memories across trips, weekends and time spent with family. When corrosion began creeping across the lower half and small faults started to grow, the owner knew it needed rescuing. Letting it go was not an option. What it needed was a full Bronze Restoration with a finish that felt personal and completely renewed.
Arrival In Poor Condition
When the van reached the workshop, the issues were clear straight away. The rear wheel arches had begun to fail. The lower sills were rusting and breaking down. The underside showed signs of age. Several panels were tired, the roof pillars needed attention, and a collection of electrical gremlins had begun to surface. It was the kind of wear that builds over time, slowly changing a once-loved van into something that no longer felt safe for future adventures.
But beneath all that, the structure still had life. The owner’s attachment was obvious, and saving the van became the goal.

Welding Work And Structural Repairs
The Bronze Restoration Package is designed for vans exactly like this, and the structural work began the moment it reached the lift. Old metal was cut away from the arches to make way for brand new, genuine replacements. The outer sill was opened up, revealing the usual hidden rust that had worked its way into the inner sill. Both were cut out and rebuilt properly, section by section.
The chassis received the same level of attention. Areas weakened by corrosion were removed and replaced. Roof pillars were repaired and solidified. Even the smaller structural pieces were rebuilt so that everything beneath the paint would support many more years on the road.
This stage of the job is always slow, careful and methodical. It is the part you cannot see when the van is finished, but it is the part that matters most.

Underseal Protection
With the welding complete, we moved on to long-term protection. The entire underside was rubbed down by hand, cleaned thoroughly and prepared for treatment. Suspension components were returned, smoothed, and finished with a protective coating that matched the customer’s preferred style. The underseal was applied evenly, forming a barrier against future corrosion and giving the van the protection it never had from the factory.
For older Bongos, this step is crucial. It is the difference between a short-term fix and a van that survives many more winters without worry.

Paint And Bodywork Transformation
Once the structure was safe, it was time to give the van the finish it deserved. The Bronze Restoration Package includes a fresh lower-half respray in the customer’s chosen colour, and this owner chose a unique shade that transformed the van’s entire look, a beautiful purple with orange pearl.
Panels were smoothed, primed and refinished. The front and rear bumpers were repainted. Roof pillars were refreshed, blending perfectly into the new lower half. The transformation was immediate. The tired exterior disappeared, replaced by a clean, sharp finish that looked better than it had in years.
A custom paint choice always adds personality, and this one made the van feel truly renewed.

Interior Improvements
Inside, small but important jobs were completed. A central locking kit was fitted. Switches were replaced. Wiring at the rear fridge and leisure battery was examined and corrected. The tent fabric had suffered a tear, so we cut out the damaged section and repaired it cleanly. These are the jobs that improve everyday usability, making the van easier and more enjoyable to live with.
Every detail mattered, because this was not just a repair. It was a rebuild with the owner’s comfort in mind.
Completion And Final Touches
With welding complete, paint finished and interior improvements handled, the final stage was a full checkover. The heater blowers were inspected. Locks were tested. Electrical systems were checked. The final touches brought the van together as one complete restoration.
When the owner collected it, they saw more than the work that had been done. They saw a van ready to create new memories, free from the issues that once held it back. A van that looked fresh, felt solid and carried the same emotional meaning it always had.
This is why we restore Bongos. Every van has a story, and every story deserves the chance to continue.
