From a serious oil leak to a fresh start and a healthy engine once again
Every Mazda Bongo has its own character, and for this one, that character came with a little bit of drama. The owner arrived after noticing large puddles of oil forming on the driveway and knew something wasn’t right. Rather than risk the next journey, they reached out for help, and we were happy to take a closer look.
Discovering the Source of the Problem
As always, we began with a free inspection to understand exactly what was going on. The moment we removed the upper and lower engine covers, it was clear this was far more than a minor oil leak.
Oil could be seen running from behind the timing belt cover, and after a closer look, we confirmed the camshaft oil seals had completely failed. The leak was so severe that it had contaminated the timing belt, creating a real risk of slippage or belt failure if left unchecked.
This was not something to ignore. It was time to take action before the damage became catastrophic.
The Repair and Replacement Work
Once disassembled, we got straight to work fitting a complete cambelt and seal kit to ensure every part of the timing system was renewed. This included:
- New camshaft oil seals
- New crankshaft seal
- Full cambelt and pulley replacement
- New hydraulic tensioner
- New water pump
- Fresh coolant with an auto bleed kit fitted for reliability
Every seal and component was carefully installed to ensure the system was dry, clean, and protected from future leaks.
Testing and Final Checks
With everything rebuilt, we ran the engine through multiple heat cycles and carried out an extended road test to confirm there were no remaining leaks or pressure issues. The Bongo ran perfectly, smooth, quiet, and oil tight.
By the time the job was complete, it wasn’t just a repair. It was a complete refresh of the engine’s heart, protecting it for years of adventures ahead.
A New Lease on Life
The owner can now look forward to driving without worry, confident that the engine is healthy, dry, and running as it should. It’s always rewarding to see a Bongo saved from the brink of a serious failure and given another chance to do what it does best, explore.
