This Mazda Bongo Passed an MOT Just Days Before We Found It Dangerous

A Fresh MOT and a New Purchase

This Mazda Bongo free inspection story started the way many do. A customer, excited about a new purchase.

After spending £6,000 on a Mazda Bongo through a private sale, the owner booked the van into us just two days later for routine maintenance. The plan was simple.

A cambelt replacement.
A full service.
And one of our free inspections.

At that stage, there was no reason to suspect anything serious. The van had passed an MOT only a week earlier.

The only advisories listed were minor issues such as tyres and lights. There was no mention of structural corrosion or dangerous repairs anywhere in the MOT history.

However, before undertaking any paid work, we completed our inspection.

What we found completely changed the situation.

Corrosion That Should Never Have Been Missed

The moment we got underneath the van, the severity of the problems became clear.

This was not minor surface rust or age-related wear.

The vehicle had dangerous corrosion around load-bearing suspension mounting points. Structural areas beneath the van were severely compromised, with multiple prior repairs carried out to an extremely poor standard.

Some sections had been patched badly. Others had clearly been repaired in ways that should never have passed an MOT inspection.

It quickly became obvious that the van was not safe.

The Real Condition Underneath

As we continued inspecting the vehicle, the list of faults grew rapidly.

The van required:

  • Full sill replacements
  • Front crossmember corner repairs
  • Front crossmember full replacement
  • Rear crossmember corner repairs
  • Chassis leg repairs
  • Extensive structural welding work throughout

Beyond the corrosion, there were also major mechanical safety concerns.

Shock absorbers were leaking.
Shocker shrouds had fallen apart.
ABS wires were hanging loose underneath the vehicle.

This was not simply a tired Bongo.

This was a dangerous vehicle that should never have been allowed back on the road.

A £6,000 Purchase That Needed Thousands Worth of Welding

For the customer, the situation was devastating.

They had spent hard-earned money on what they believed was a safe and roadworthy Mazda Bongo. It had a fresh MOT and looked acceptable on the surface.

In reality, the van required around £4,000 worth of welding and repairs just to bring it up to a safe and proper standard.

Worse still, this was discovered only days after purchase.

Why Free Inspections Matter So Much

Stories like this are exactly why we offer a Mazda Bongo free inspection service.

Before we charged this customer for any servicing or repair work, we thoroughly inspected the vehicle. That inspection potentially saved them from investing even more money into a van that was fundamentally unsafe underneath.

An MOT certificate does not always tell the full story.

Unfortunately, we see situations like this far more often than we should.

Helping the Customer Get Justice

Once we had fully documented the vehicle’s condition, we informed the customer immediately.

Naturally, they were extremely upset and suddenly left without reliable transport only days after purchasing the van.

However, we did not stop there.

We approached the MOT station directly and arranged a meeting with the owner. Using the evidence gathered during our inspection, we challenged the condition the van had been passed in.

After extensive discussions, we successfully helped the customer secure a full refund for the vehicle.

Most importantly, we did this without charging the customer anything for our help or inspection.

An MOT Is Not a Guarantee of Safety

This story highlights something every Mazda Bongo owner needs to understand.

A fresh MOT does not automatically mean a vehicle is safe, solid or properly repaired.

Unfortunately, we regularly inspect vans that have recently passed MOT tests despite serious structural corrosion and dangerous repairs underneath.

Because of this, a proper specialist inspection can make all the difference.

Protect Yourself Before It Becomes a Disaster

If you have recently purchased a Mazda Bongo, or if you are unsure about the condition of your van underneath, it is always worth having it inspected properly.

Catching serious corrosion early can prevent:

  • Dangerous driving conditions
  • Failed MOT surprises
  • Thousands of pounds in unexpected repair costs
  • Being left without a usable vehicle

Most importantly, it can protect you and your passengers.

We See This More Often Than You Think

This is not an isolated case.

We help Mazda Bongo owners in situations like this regularly, and in many cases, we help customers recover money for vehicles sold in unacceptable condition.

That is exactly why our free inspection service exists.
