A Mazda Bongo Reborn With a Purple Pearl Shine

Some restorations stand out because of the work involved. Others stand out because of the personality behind them. This Mazda Bongo had both. It arrived tired, worn and in need of structural work, yet the owner saw its potential. They wanted something bold, something personal and something that felt new again. That vision brought us to one of the most striking transformations we have completed recently, finished in a deep purple with a vibrant orange pearl that catches the sunlight beautifully.

When It First Rolled In

On arrival, the van showed the usual signs of age. Corrosion had begun to affect core structural areas; the exhaust hanger had failed; gaskets were leaking; and several mechanical parts were nearing the end of their life. It still had a spark, but it needed proper attention to keep it on the road safely.

The owner loved the van and wanted it restored, not replaced. They also had a very clear idea for the final look. That mix of emotional connection and creative vision always makes for a special project.

Where the Hard Work Began

This restoration started with the Bronze Mazda Bongo Restoration Package. The rear wheel arches were replaced with genuine new panels, and the entire lower half was inspected, opened up and repaired where needed. The outer and inner sill repairs formed a major part of the job, as both had begun to break down behind the original covers.

The cross-member corners were also weak and required cutout and rebuild work. Once opened up, the corrosion proved deeper than expected, but every section was rebuilt properly so the structure would last for years to come.

The exhaust hanger had snapped and was fully re-welded. The rocker cover gasket leak was cleaned up and corrected. The heat shield was repaired. By the time the welding was complete, everything underneath was clean, strong and safe.

Mechanical Repairs And Essential Fixes

With the structure sorted, we moved through the mechanical list. This included replacing the front wheel bearing, renewing the belts, installing new brake pads front and rear, repairing the exhaust hanger, fixing the heat shield, addressing service items and checking for leaks throughout.

The van also received a full service, including engine oil and filter, fuel filter, and checks on gearbox oil, differential oil, coolant levels and brake condition. This is the kind of maintenance that gives owners confidence from the moment they drive away.

Protecting It for the Long Road Ahead

Once the welding and mechanical work were complete, we moved on to the underseal stage. Older Bongos rely heavily on proper rust protection to stay healthy, so the entire underside was rubbed down by hand, cleaned, treated and coated in a protective finish.

Suspension components were rubbed back and finished in a clean matte black, giving the underside both protection and a tidy visual result.

A Purple With Orange Pearl Lower Half, Made to Sparkle

The final request from the owner was the most exciting part of the build. They wanted a purple lower half, but not just any purple. They wanted a finish that looked deep and rich in the shade, then exploded with colour in direct sunlight.

We created a purple mixed with an orange pearl, a combination that creates a subtle shimmer when the sun hits the panels. It is bold without being loud, unique without being overwhelming and gives this Mazda Bongo an identity that no other van on the road will match.

Paired with fresh front and rear bumper paintwork, the van now looks vibrant, crisp and full of character.

Fixing the Interior Touches

The interior received a handful of important finishing touches. The van had new floor mats with the Mazda logo, new Mazda decals, new number plates and polished headlamps to complete the fresh exterior look. These small details make a huge difference to the final presentation, giving the van a cleaner and newer feel inside and out.

Back on Its Feet Again

After all checks were completed, the van was given a final inspection and a complete road test. Everything worked as it should. With the welding done, the mechanical repairs completed, the underseal applied and that stunning purple pearl lower half shining brightly, the transformation was ready to be revealed.

The owner collected a van that felt completely refreshed, both structurally and visually. What arrived as a tired and ageing Bongo left as a unique, eye-catching and reliable camper ready for many more years on the road.
