Giving a Well-Loved Bongo the Fresh Start It Deserved
Every Mazda Bongo has a story, and this one was ready for its next chapter.
Like many vans that have been enjoyed for years, it had reached the point where several areas needed attention. There were structural repairs required underneath, a handful of mechanical jobs to address and plenty of cosmetic improvements that would help bring the whole vehicle back to life.
Rather than tackling one problem at a time, the owner chose to invest properly in the van with our Silver Restoration Package and a long list of upgrades designed to make it look, feel and perform at its very best.
The result was a complete transformation.
Structural Repairs Before Anything Else
As with every restoration, we started underneath.
Several areas required welding repairs to ensure the van remained structurally sound and capable of passing its MOT correctly.
Work included:
- Nearside rear crossmember repairs
- Offside rear inner and outer sill repairs
- Nearside rear outer sill corner repairs
These areas were cut back and repaired properly before any cosmetic work began.
By taking care of the structure first, we ensured the van had a solid foundation for everything that followed.
Protecting the Future with Comprehensive Underseal
Once the welding work was complete, the van received a full underseal treatment.
The underside was thoroughly prepared before being protected, while suspension components were rubbed down and refinished in matte black to create a clean and consistent appearance.
This process not only improves how the underside looks but, more importantly, helps protect the vehicle from future corrosion.
A Stunning Silver Package Transformation
With the structural work completed, it was time for the visual transformation.
The owner selected one of the most eye-catching colour combinations we have completed in recent months.
The roof remained white, while the lower half was refinished in a beautiful pastel blue.
Combined with:
- Genuine Mazda rear wheel arches
- Freshly painted front and rear bumpers
- Refinished spoiler
- New Mazda decals
The result completely changed the character of the van.
The pastel blue gives the vehicle a bright, modern and cheerful appearance while still retaining the timeless style that makes Mazda Bongos so popular.
Custom Styling Details Throughout
To complement the new paintwork, the grille was refinished with an all-black centre section while retaining the styling that suits the facelift design perfectly.
The combination of:
- White roof
- Pastel blue lower half
- Black grille details
- Refreshed trim pieces
created a clean and contemporary finish that immediately stands out.
Improving Reliability at the Same Time
The owner wanted more than just a cosmetic restoration.
Several important reliability upgrades were also carried out during the project.
This included:
- New coolant alarm
- New coolant bleed kit
- Replacement water pump
- Coolant system improvements
These upgrades provide additional protection against one of the most common causes of serious engine damage in Mazda Bongos.
Sorting the Electrical Gremlins
Like many older camper conversions, this van had accumulated a few electrical issues over the years.
During the restoration, we:
- Repaired the radio wiring
- Rewired the fridge installation
- Repaired central locking wiring
- Restored all internal lighting functions
- Cleaned and corrected poor wiring connections throughout
By the time the work was completed, every system was functioning as intended.
Bringing Modern Usability Back
Several practical improvements were also carried out to make everyday use more enjoyable.
These included:
- Relocating the hookup connection to the rear bumper
- Servicing the pop-top roof system
- Replacing worn roof struts
- Replacing damaged seals
- Supplying new wheel hub covers
These smaller details often go unnoticed individually, but together they make a huge difference to the ownership experience.
Better Visibility and Safety
The lighting system also received attention.
The original headlamps were machine-polished to restore clarity before receiving an upgraded headlamp wiring kit and ultra-bright bulbs.
This significantly improves visibility while modernising the driving experience.
A Fresh MOT and a Fresh Future
Once all work was completed, the van was issued with a fresh MOT and prepared for many more years of adventures.
What started as a Bongo needing structural repairs, electrical attention and cosmetic restoration left as a completely refreshed campervan.
