Mazda Bongo Solar And Split Charge System For Off Grid Camping

One of the biggest upgrades you can make to a Mazda Bongo is the ability to camp comfortably off-grid. This van came to us with exactly that goal in mind. The owner wanted reliable power, simple usability and the freedom to park up without worrying about hook-up points.

The solution was a carefully planned electrical upgrade tailored to how Mazda Bongos are used, not a generic camper setup.

Designing A Practical Off-Grid Setup

Off-grid power is not just about adding a solar panel. It is about how all the components work together safely and efficiently.

For this Bongo, we designed a system that charges while driving, generates power when parked, and distributes it efficiently inside the van without unnecessary complexity.

The focus was reliability, clean installation and ease of use.

200 Watt Slimline Flexible Solar Panel With MPPT Control

At the heart of the upgrade is a 200-watt slimline flexible solar panel, mounted discreetly to keep the roof profile clean.

Flexible panels are ideal for Bongos because they sit low, reduce wind resistance and work well alongside pop tops and roof accessories.

The panel is paired with an MPPT controller, which is far more efficient than basic regulators. It constantly optimises the charge from the panel, resulting in better performance in mixed light conditions and more usable power throughout the day.

Split Charge System For Charging While Driving

Solar alone is only part of the picture. To ensure the leisure battery charges while on the move, a split charge system was installed.

This includes:

  • Split charge relay
  • Properly rated wiring
  • Safe, tidy integration with the vehicle’s electrical system

When the engine is running, the leisure battery charges automatically. When parked, the system isolates the starter battery, protecting it from being drained.

This is essential for stress-free camping.

Interior Power And Lighting Improvements

To make the power usable where it matters, we also added practical interior electrics.

This included:

  • Two sets of USB charging points
  • Two 12-volt lights fitted neatly under the shelf

These additions provide the owner with convenient charging for phones and devices, along with soft, usable lighting in the living area, without relying on harsh overhead lighting.

Everything was positioned for daily use, not just to tick a box.

Why Specialist Installation Matters

Electrical work on a Mazda Bongo needs to be done properly. Incorrect wiring, undersized cables or poorly integrated systems can cause faults, flat batteries or even fire risks.

Because we work on Bongos every day, we understand:

  • Where to route wiring safely
  • How to integrate with existing systems
  • What works long term, not just on day one

This setup was installed cleanly, tested thoroughly and explained clearly to the owner so they can use it with confidence.

Ready For Off-Grid Adventures

With the solar panel, MPPT controller, split charge system and interior electrics all working together, this Mazda Bongo is now properly equipped for off-grid camping.

Whether it is a weekend away, a longer trip, or simply parking up somewhere quiet for the night, the owner now has reliable power without relying on campsites or hookups.
