This is a story we never enjoy telling, but one that needs to be shared.
Buying a Mazda Bongo from a specialist can make the difference between a safe family camper and a dangerous mistake. This customer believed she had found the perfect van for transporting her young children and enjoying family holidays, supported by a fresh 12-month MOT with no advisories. What we uncovered told a very different story.
We were initially called out to the van because it was having trouble starting. As soon as we saw the van’s condition, we knew something was up. Hearing the owner’s story about a fresh MOT with no advisories just didn’t add up, so we immediately offered a free inspection and recovery to our workshop to diagnose the van further. What we uncovered was deeply concerning.
When A Clean MOT Gives False Confidence
A clean MOT should mean peace of mind. In this case, it did the opposite.
As soon as we inspected the van, it became clear that serious faults had been deliberately hidden rather than repaired. This was not a matter of age or wear. This was a vehicle that had been made to look roadworthy on paper while being fundamentally unsafe underneath.
This was not just about a bad purchase. This was about a family being placed at risk.

A Van That Put Young Children In Danger
The owner had purchased this Mazda Bongo to carry her children and to create family memories on holiday. Instead, the van posed a serious danger every time it was driven.
We found extensive structural corrosion and multiple bodged repairs intended to disguise the vehicle’s true condition.
These included:
- Rear anti-roll bar bushes wrapped in PVC tape instead of proper rubber bushes
- Rear chassis legs are packed with body filler where suspension mounts should be
- Plastic bags stuffed into the rear crossmember corners to hide corrosion
- Suspension mounting points that were structurally unsound
- Extensive corrosion to outriggers, sills and chassis rails
- Gearbox oil cooler pipe cut and bypassed
- Rotten coolant pipes running front to back
- A cracked windscreen
- Heavy oil leaks
These were not cosmetic issues. These were serious safety failures.

A Van That Should Never Have Been Sold
Based on its condition, this van should never have been sold to a family. It should never have passed an MOT, and it certainly should never have been driven.
The paperwork gave the owner false reassurance, and that is what makes this case so upsetting.
When Buying From a Mazda Bongo Specialist Makes All The Difference
A Mazda Bongo specialist knows exactly where these vans fail and what to look for. We see the same problem areas time and time again.
Buying from a specialist or having a specialist inspect the van immediately after purchase dramatically reduces the risk of situations like this.
A specialist does not rely solely on paperwork. They look at the structure, the safety-critical areas, and the details that general garages often miss.
Stepping In When It Matters
When the full extent of the problem became clear, the owner was understandably distraught. At Mazda Bongo Auto Centre, we treat our customers like family. When someone takes advantage of a family member, we do not stand back.
We worked directly with the selling garage and the MOT station that issued the certificate, presenting our findings clearly and professionally.
The result was the right one. The owner received a full refund.
A Message To Anyone Buying A Mazda Bongo Without a Specialist
If you are considering buying a Mazda Bongo, especially to carry your family, please think carefully about where you buy it from.
If you do not buy from a specialist, have the van inspected by one as soon as possible after purchase. Do not rely on an MOT alone.
It could prevent financial loss. More importantly, it could prevent serious harm.
