A Bongo That Meant More Than Just a Vehicle
This Mazda Bongo welding restoration began with a van that clearly meant a lot to its owner. Affectionately named Vera, this was not just transport. It was part of their life.
However, like many Bongos of this age, time had taken its toll. What looked like a usable van on the surface was hiding serious structural issues underneath.
Because of this, Vera arrived with one goal. Pass the MOT and be saved properly, not patched up.
The Reality Beneath the Surface
Once we began inspecting the van, the extent of the work quickly became clear. This was not a small repair job.
Both sides of the van required significant structural attention. The inner and outer sills were heavily corroded, while multiple chassis areas had weakened over time.
In addition, crossmember corners on both sides needed full repair, along with sections of the rear chassis and inner wheel arch. Even the areas under the battery trays required welding work.
As a result, this Mazda Bongo welding restoration became a full structural rebuild rather than a simple fix.
Cutting Back and Rebuilding the Structure
To carry out the work properly, we cut back all affected areas to solid metal. This is always the only way to ensure long term strength.
We then rebuilt the structure piece by piece. New inner and outer sills were fabricated and fitted, along with repairs to the chassis tub and crossmember corners.
On the offside, additional work was required to restore the sill structure and heater box panel. Meanwhile, the front chassis sections under the battery trays were repaired to bring everything back to a safe standard.
Every section was welded carefully and reinforced where needed. As a result, Vera now has the strength and integrity it originally left the factory with.
Protecting the Work for the Future
Once the welding was complete, attention turned to protecting the van properly.
The entire underside was rubbed down and prepared before applying a full underseal treatment. Suspension components were also refinished in matte black, restoring their appearance while adding an extra layer of protection.
Because of this, the work carried out is not only strong but also protected against future corrosion.
Bringing Vera Back to Life with the Bronze Package
With the structural work complete, it was time to transform the appearance.
As part of this Mazda Bongo welding restoration, Vera received our Bronze Restoration Package. This included new genuine rear wheel arches and a full respray of the lower half.
All bodywork imperfections were addressed, while the bumpers were repainted to match. The result is a clean, sharp finish that completely changes how the van looks.
What was once tired and worn now looks fresh, solid and ready for the road again.
Mechanical Work to Match the Transformation
A build like this is never just about appearance. Therefore, we made sure the mechanical side matched the quality of the structural work.
A full cam belt kit was supplied and fitted, including a new water pump, tensioner and seals. Fresh coolant and antifreeze were added to complete the system.
We also installed a coolant auto-bleed kit and alarm to help protect the engine moving forward.
In addition, the van received a full service, along with new glow plugs, brake pads and exhaust work where required.
As a result, Vera is now not only structurally sound but mechanically ready for the road ahead.
Back Where It Belongs
By the time this Mazda Bongo welding restoration was complete, the transformation was clear.
What arrived as a structurally compromised van is now solid, protected and ready to be enjoyed again. More importantly, Vera has been saved properly.
For the owner, that means everything. This was never just about passing an MOT. It was about keeping a much-loved Bongo on the road.
